Conferencing & Functions - Hangar One

History & Renovation

Hangar One is adjacent to the Aviator and overlooks the busy grass runways of Sywell Aerodrome, one of the finest airfields in the country. The Hangar is made up of 3 smaller hangars, originally erected in 1941 to house aircraft used to train RAF pilots during World War II. In 1948 the smaller hangars were dismantled and re-erected together to form the present Hangar One.

Before being converted for use as a Conference Venue, the Hangar was home to a helicopter organisation, which maintained and sold helicopters to customers around the world. In December 2000 work began to renovate Hangar One and transform it into an exciting new venue.

A large bar and kitchen were built into the southern gable end, and a passage to the east side connects the Hangar to the Aerodrome Bar and Restaurant. The doors to the north gable retain access for aircraft and vehicles.

Re-cladding provided the Hangar with an insulated skin and new floor to produce a completely smooth coloured finish. Extensive air extraction, lighting and audio systems have been installed. Although the building is a World War II hangar, with the use of wood veneer, period features and sympathetic lighting the appropriate ambience is provided for any occasion.
